@harbeh – not so much ‘capitalism’ itself as it is the dishonesty of agressive advertising. One can sell a product without embellishing or lying about it’s alleged virtues. The problem arises in the notion of giving the product a grossly disproportionate artifical sense of value – both health-wise and monetary.

The US “health food” industry has taken cheap surplusses and created billion dollar products using this technique.

Mangosteen pericarp used to be an agricultural byproduct!

all hail capitalism……

In Brazil and throughout much of the amazon, Acai berries are very cheap. They are excessively abundant. Acai is “poor man’s berry.” Acai is only expensive outside of Brazil.

The tree requires a frost free environment and constantly wet acidic soil. It would only be feasible to grow on a commercial scale in places like Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and similar frost-free areas.

sk8guitarest February 16, 2010 at 2:38 am

how bout we grow the berry in america and make a profit our selves?

sk8guitarest February 16, 2010 at 3:26 am

do they sell these at a store the berries i mean???? really i mean how much would a mini basket of berrys be then if that bottle is 45? think about it:)

abyssquick February 16, 2010 at 3:56 am

I want Brazilians to be the ones benefiting from Acai. Acai comes from your jungles, it is your product.

What US companies do is disrespectfu- they buy Acai cheaply, and give it artificial resale value, by marketing it dishonestly as a “cure-all.” These companies make millions and millions by telling $40-a bottle marketing lies to the US public about Acai

Some even try to patent your Acai – giving them exclusive rights to extracts, preparations, etc, of your berry. This greed needs to stop.

i know it was figure of speech, i just used it also as an example coz once hte prices of diesel in the USA was an issue for its economy, and as i heard from an american reporter on the TV news “Even Brazil found the solution for their diesel”… kind of understimating us… but i know i shouldnt generalize, good and bad people are spread around the globe regardless of their nationality… i didnt mean to be rude either, just annoyed on the way Man destroy the planet coz of their greed

abyssquick February 16, 2010 at 5:44 am

My comment was never meant to be insulting to Brazilians. Not at all. Please read it again. I am frustrated with unscrupulous capitalists, the same as you suggest of yourself. The comment about “apple juice” was a figure of example – not to be taken literally.

abyssquick February 16, 2010 at 5:50 am

Whoa, I’m not talking about that. It’s not Brazilians doing the exploiting – it’s Americans.

I’m talking about the steep prices these US importers charge to the US public. Your abundant Brazilian commodity is making people very wealthy, because they mark up the price 10x what they pay for it. They are able to sell it to the public because they make up claims of health virtue and medical research.

Sambazon is a good company – not too overpriced. But they are an -exception- to the rule.

raphmartins February 16, 2010 at 6:45 am

So If you “abyssquick” want to blame someone, blame your “Fellows” for being so capitalists, and dont worry because we can produce our own apple juice as well as Eco friendly diesel….

raphmartins February 16, 2010 at 7:03 am

These young travelers are the owner of Sambazon, and they do try their best to make acai a popular fruit in the USA. Other american companies, like Bolthouse farms even have installations in Brazil to make easier the exportation. For us acai is just a very tasty and energetic (so doesnt help on weight loss) and if We need to lose weight we’ll just get our fat arses out of the couch and go to gym, and obviously avoid food like MC Donalds e similars.

raphmartins February 16, 2010 at 8:00 am

First of, if acai is popular in America nowadays, It’s because of a group of americans that came to Brazil on vacations and tried acai and loved it. Then they decided to take it to the USA. We Brazilian consume acai, mainly acai ice cream, and never tried to explore the “miracle” side of it. Then The Great? American cientists decided to take advantage of its benefits to create a commercial product which is mainly consumed by american because We Brazilian have a very natural and healthy diet.

abyssquick February 16, 2010 at 8:19 am

People here in America are so easily taken by “health-food” marketing. Acai, mangostee, goji – each is a cheap, easily renewed surplus in it’s native land. These companies’ profit margins are obscene. The public – often the people selling the products through MLM – are none the wiser.

As a pomologist (fruit science) I have an exasperating time trying to inform people that these companies are taking advantage of their provincial ignorance of economics, science, and the fruit itself.

abyssquick February 16, 2010 at 8:52 am

The species Acai – euterpe oleracea – grows in stands by the millions in Brazil – it is excessively abundant. In major Amazon cities, 400,000 lbs of this fruit are sold in a single day. This species is so abundant, it is also used for palm hearts. You know, the $1.49 cans!

Why, my fellow Americans, are you paying $40 a? bottle for this juice / pill? Should we sell apple juice to Brazilians for $40?

These are cheap surpluses, and these profit-mongers have you thinking it’s a “miracle” food!

All lazy fat asses will look for these things and force themselves to believe they work.
Get your fuc_ing fat asses off the couch, exercise everyday (go for a 30min walk), stay away from McD, KFC and all the other poisonous fast food outlets, homecook, buy veggies and fruit at the supermarket, eat proper size meals and don’t over eat…
I’m 34, 2 kids, 2 jobs, and still manage to find time for exercising, son don’t come with your lame excuses and then complain because you’re fat and unfit
